Animal Spirit Guide Crow

CelticWeave

The first thing we notice when looking at the Crow is that its entire body is black. In Earth Medicine, colors are indicative of specific attunement, with each variance of color representing different attributes. In relation to Animal Spirits, black represents the Void. The Void is the place that exists between dimensions and time. Here, the vast darkness is amorphous, the still pool of creation awaiting to be formed and born.

For the one beside whom Crow flies as a Primary Totem, there will exist a deeply spiritual nature. This will be one who has been gifted with natural magical abilities that are waiting to be discovered and developed. Yet they will also be one that is prone to withdrawing into periods of stillness and quiet, as they gather to them the knowledge contained within the Void.

Childhood

In childhood, these are the souls that will often vacillate between periods of heightened social activity, and times of near complete solitary withdrawal. They can appear to be amongst the most friendly and outgoing of children, only to take their friends, educators, and even parents by surprise by suddenly shutting themselves off in their room, or going for solitary walks.

If parents and educators can understand that this is a young person who will need understanding as they go through their varying social needs without making the child feel self-conscious, then they will retain their ability to successfully navigate social skies at their own unique pace. This isn't to suggest that signs of depression in the young Crow should go unattended, but the parent or educator that takes the time to become familiar with this child's need for periodic times of reflection, will help them grow into healthy, happy adults.

Spirituality

Throughout the ages and across many different cultures, Crow has been associated with the ability to cross the dimensions. His ability to fly from the realm of the physical to the plane of spirit, and to dip in and out of the Void, has earned him the reputation of being the Winged One of magicians and sorcerers.

For the two-legged with Crow as a Primary Totem, although they are rarely active members in traditional Judea-Christian, or other established religious organizations, they are none-the-less deeply spiritual beings.  Typically, they will tend to resonate to Nature-based religions or pagan spirituality, and it is in these faiths that they will feel a greater sense of belonging.

Because of their inherent curiosity about alternative spiritual belief systems, coupled with their natural magickal abilities, the Crow individual will be drawn to spellcasting and magick rituals. When operating from the higher octave of this Medicine, these can be amongst the most powerful of witches and mages. However, when operating from the Shadow side of Crow, they can be drawn to the darker arts and risk losing themselves to the sinister powers instead.

Socialization

When in love, the Crow will make a witty and charming companion, with their talent for mimicry a source of amusement not only to their mate, but to the Crow themselves. Yet in order to keep their affection, you must keep their attention, and this is most easily attained through keeping them mentally and intellectually stimulated.

In nature, Crows gather in “Murders,” or flocks of vocal and curious members. Like their Animal Spirit Guide, the one beside whom Crow flies will be a very social individual. Yet, as was mentioned earlier above, they will also need periodic moments of quiet solitude, much as their Creature Ally of lore would journey into the Void before returning to the light once more. When given space and understanding, these individuals can make devoted partners who will keep you amused, entertained, and intrigued.

Summary

If Crow has chosen to fly beside you as Animal Spirit Guide, feel blessed, for he is picky and will only choose a “shiny” soul. You have been gifted with the Medicine of Carrying Lost Souls From Darkness Into Light, yet with this gift is a heavy responsibility that requires you to first fly through your own dark night of the soul. From this, you will have learned the way so that you may carry others through on their own journey later.
